Joy
This piece depicts Joy (of Red Velvet) as my subject matter looking straight ahead with a crown on her head. The title of this piece is "Joy" The elements of space and value are most evident in this piece as well as the principals of contrast and unity,The media I chose for this piece was charcoal. I also mixed in some pencil and white gel pen as well. I used either a charcoal pencil or a charcoal stick for most of it. I rubbed the charcoal onto a piece of paper until some dust started to form and I applied it on the paper using a makeup brush because I lost my paintbrush I usually use for this.
I chose to draw this because when I was choosing reference pictures I asked a bunch of people which one they thought would be best for this project and the majority chose for me to draw Joy. This is usually how I choose my reference photos lately. My work does not express a personal or social issue, I just wanted this piece to express feelings of empowerment.
My goals as an artist are to create realistic pieces in different types of medias. This piece somewhat helped me reach my goal. I wanted to do another charcoal piece and I feel like the first time I used it I got really lucky because this time was more stressful.
I learned a lot about mapping and creating the right amount of value though this unfamiliar media. The final piece is pretty close to what I imagined, I expected it to look more smooth. This piece will influence my future artworks by making me more likely to try new medias and improve in the ones I've already tried.

Lupe
This piece depicts a pink Guadalupe Juarez as my subject matter. The title of this piece is "Lupe" The elements of space and texture as well as the principals of movement and pattern are most obvious in my work.
This piece is multimedia, I used markers, colored pencils, pens, acrylic and watercolor paint, scraps of newspaper, glitter, rhinestones, and oil pastel. I started out by sketching her out as well as the four letters to spell her name. I painted some of the newspaper with watercolor and glued it down along with some pieces of paper i had previously painted. From there I kind of just added what I thought looked best, switching between different medias constantly. I added the colored pencil in her face and the heard shaped strip of rhinestones last.
I was inspired to create this piece by Guadalupe. After I asked her if I could draw her for this piece we began discussing ideas. She played a huge role in my creative process for this piece and I couldn't have produced this without her. She wanted it to have very light colors, mostly pink. She wanted the piece to feel very light and airy, I did my best to convey that. This piece does not express a particular personal or social issue. I wanted to show how I feel about my friend in this piece. Although we don't talk everyday we are still very close and always there if the other needs something, it's a simple kind of love. I feel like the light colors in this piece help convey that.
My goals as an artist are to create realistic and meaningful pieces using different medias that help me step out of my comfort zone. I feel like this piece somewhat helped me achieve this. Multimedia is definitely my comfort zone and the style of this piece is something I really enjoy creating, so I wouldn't say it challenged me as much as it could have. I do think it's more meaningful than other pieces I've done.
In creating this piece I learned more about using colors to express emotions as well as creating in a monochromatic style. The final piece is not really what I imagined. I expected it to be more defined, and I didn't think I would go full on monochromatic. I had originally planned to draw her in regular pencil and make the background pink. This piece will influence my future works by helping me establish one art style I like to create in and making me more likely to do monochromatic again.

Regi and Santi
This piece is a black and white portrait of Regina and Santiago as my subject matters. The title is "Regi and Santi". The elements of texture and value as well as the principals of contrast and unity are most evident.
The media I used is pencil and a bit of white gel pen. I drew out my grid and erased it once I was done mapping. From there I just crosshatched different areas at a time to build value and define the shadows and highlights. I used a white gel pen to highlight some of the smaller areas my eraser couldn't go.
I was inspired to create this by the people I drew in the piece. This artwork does not express a personal or social issue. I wanted to show happy and fresh emotions through this piece. I can't imagine how much joy my friend feels to have this new baby in her life. She must be overflowing with joy to have him and be able to watch him grow. I can't put it into words very well but I feel so happy for them both. I just know he changed her life and that's something worth drawing a picture of to remember this new beginning.
My goals as an artist are to create realistic and meaningful pieces using a variety of medias that help me step out of my comfort zone. This piece somewhat helped me achieve this. Although I did stick to my comfort media of pencil, I also tried to challenge myself by drawing on a much bigger piece of paper as well as drawing two people at once.
In creating this artwork I learned how fun it is to draw on bigger paper, also how it's still meaningful to draw a simple picture. I always felt like I needed to use color or symbolism to convey any trace of the subject matters personality to the viewer, but I think the picture speaks for itself. This one in particular doesn't require much extra stuff around it for the viewer to be able to see the meaning. It's simple but powerful. The final piece is not exactly what I imagined. To be honest I didn't think I would do so well as far as proportions and drawing the image accurately goes, but I think I got pretty close in the end. It was challenging, especially with having two people to draw. This piece will influence my future pieces by making me more likely to work on a bigger scale and not being scared to leave all the complex stuff behind and have a simple drawing,

Game of Life
This piece depicts a house of cards with a hand holding a card as my subject matter. The title of this piece is "House of Cards" The elements of line and space as well as the principals of contrast and emphasis are most evident in this piece.
For this piece my media was marker and pencil. At first I was only going to use pencil but I felt like it looked too bland. I went in with a gray marker and did most of the shadows and than I finished the red parts.
My goals as an artist are to create meaningful and realistic pieces using different medias. This piece really helped be as far as expression goes, but my technical skill was not at it's best in this one. I thought the marker would look better than it did.
I wasn't inspired by anyone in particular to create this piece, I just thought it would be a good metaphor. This does not express a political or social issue. The house of cards was supposed to represent being in a part of your life where everything good but you know it will be over soon. I feel like throughout the phases of our lives we transition from familiar things to really different things, to me it's like knocking over the house and building it back again. I'm fairly close to the end of high school and even now I can feel my life beginning to change. In 10 years all the people that are in my life right now may not be there. I will have a completely different routine and set of people I see day to day. To me that's like re-building your home. I hope it didn't come across so pessimistic, even though I didn't mean for it to be the post optimistic piece. I wanted to express emotions of bravery but also fear through this piece.
In creating this artwork I learned more about expressing my emotions through metaphors. I feel like it helps to take something serious that you feel and draw it in a literal sense. For me it helps me to see those things as more in my reach, more understandable and controllable. The final piece is not what I imagined. To be honest I thought I would have done a lot more with this piece, I kind of slacked off. I justify not trying as hard on a piece when I'm not really interested in the prompt but this one was really cool, so I may re-do it one day and improve my technical skill. This piece will influence my future artworks by helping me see value in both expression and creating with good technical skill.

Black Swan
This piece depicts an inverted silhouette of Jimin (of BTS) as my subject matter. The title of this piece is "Black Swan". The elements of space and value as well as the principles of contrast and unity are most evident in this piece.
The media for this piece is charcoal, watercolor, newspaper, and glitter. I started by mapping out the silhouette, then I painted the background with black watercolors. I glued newspaper on the other half and filled other parts in with black glitter.
I wasn't inspired by anything in particular to create this piece; this piece does not express a personal or social issue. I wanted to express the feeling of losing passion for your craft.
My goals as an artist are to create realistic pieces with different medias. This piece helped me reach the goal by challenging me to use different medias together.
In creating this artwork I learned more about working with charcoal. The final piece is not what I imagined, I originally had a different silhouette at the bottom which I cut off. I didn't expect my color scheme to include any color, I had black and white in mind, but the addition of newspaper and glitter changed the color scheme I had in mind.
This piece will influence my future art works by making more likely to work with these medias after gaining experience working with it.

Swan
This piece depicts three prints of a swan as my subject matter. The title of this piece is "Swan". The element of space and the principle of contrast are most obvious in this work.
This artwork is made from acrylic paint. I created a stamp using a Styrofoam plate and hot glue.
I was not inspired by anything to create this piece. This work does not express a personal or a social issue. I was not trying to express any particular emotions in this artwork.
My goals as an artist are to create realistic pieces using different medias an techniques. This piece somewhat helped me reach this goal because I tried printmaking.
In creating this piece I learned a lot about Styrofoam. At first, I planned to poke holes into the Styrofoam to make a stippling effect, but that did not work out. So, I tried to indent the Styrofoam using my paper and a pencil, but that did not work out either. I finally improvised and used hot glue after discovering my Styrofoam was too thin.
The final piece is not at all how I imagined. I originally planned to create a more complex design for this piece, using a portrait as my subject matter. That did not work out because the hot glue burnt holes into my Styrofoam, so I was not able to add details or complex shapes for the stamp. This piece will influence my future artworks by inspiring me to buy thicker Styrofoam.
